Q&A

A list of our most frequently asked questions

Toilet is slow to flush away

  • There could be a blockage between the toilet and the septic tank.
  • There may be a blockage in the septic tank due to infrequent desludging and the disposal of products such as wipes.
  • Water may be getting into the tank but has no way out, this water needs an outlet.
  • There may be an obstruction between the tank and the percolation area.
  • The percolation area may be too small and unable to take the amount of effluent coming from the property.
  • If the tank is not desludged on a regular basis, the sludge that’s created in the tank would be washed out into the percolation area thus blocking the area over a length of time.

There is a wet patch on the lawn with lush green grass growing on it, especially evident when grass is cut.
The effluent in the tank contains Nitrogen and Phosphorus, if this is leaking onto your lawn it acts as a natural fertiliser which fertilises the surrounding ground leading to the growth of lush green grass. This would be a clear indicator that the pipe in the percolation area is leaking and would need to be checked as a matter of urgency. This is untreated waste that contains harmful bacteria and toxic components that are harmful to humans and the environment.
Just got septic tank emptied; its full 2 days later?

  • It is possible that the tank is leaking and that the surrounding ground may be leaking water into the tank
  • The percolation area is blocked or too small and not letting water escape from the tank, percolation area may be installed incorrectly.
  • It’s possible that the storm water from the roof is connected to the sewer line and is flooding the tank when it rains

*It is vital that before the installation of a percolation area that the ground is checked to see if it can take the amount of effluent produced by the property (hydraulic loading)

Odour coming from the septic tank

  • Tank may be malfunctioning, ensure that it is serviced regularly
  • Too much detergent/bleach kills the bacteria that are necessary for the system to function properly and creates hypoxic conditions in the tank leading to an unpleasant smell.
  • Is the septic tank ventilated, is the percolation area ventilated, is there a smell pipe /vent stack on the foul/sewer line?
  • If it’s a waste water treatment system make sure the air blower is working properly, if the noise/humming sound from tank has stopped it would indicate that the blower has malfunctioned and this may cause an odour

Can’t find our septic tank?
We have the most upto date pipe tracing technology and will easily locate your tank.
We are purchasing a property; do we need a report on the condition of the septic tank?
The simple answer is yes! It is vital that you know the condition of the septic tank and percolation area before you purchase the property. If the waste water system fails after purchase, you are solely responsible for the cost of repair or replacement. We conduct thorough investigations of the waste water and storm network and provide you with a detailed report on our findings.
Do we need to service our system? How often?
First of all you need to determine what type of system you have, whether it is a septic tank or a wastewater treatment system. The difference between these are the waste water treatment system is powered by electricity, it may have air blowers and discharge pump bio media and diffusers, these components do need servicing periodically to make sure the system runs smoothly and it will prolong the life of the system.

Usually there are no mechanical parts in septic tank so they are cheaper to maintain, your septic tank would need to be desludged on a regular basis, depending on amount of usage. Most manufacturers would recommend one to two years

We live on a multi house estate; do you work on larger plants/systems?
Yes, we are fully trained and insured to work on domestic and commercial systems (installation, maintenance & repair)
We have a problem with our septic tank, will our insurance cover it?
We have assisted many clients with successful insurance claims. We can provide reports for assessors.
We have a pipe in the garden, how do we find out what it’s for?
We have specialist equipment that can trace even the smallest pipes (from about half inch in diameter) so if you want to find where a pipe goes just give us a call.

While there are a large number of common problems which can occur with septic tank/ WWTS systems, these can be repaired with professional assistance.

Just a note to say how pleased Di and I are with the tank and filter system you installed at our holiday home in Dunfanaghy. O’Hara & Harrison Ltd. have previously employed the services of Almo Environmental to assist in locating and repair of damaged underground ducts for power cable and fibre optic cabling. We were very impressed with the manner in which they dealt with matters, from their Health and Safety procedures, Traffic Management, their ability to locate and repair damage ducting in an efficient cost effective way. Margo Kelly

Almo Environmental Solutions installed a complete new sewerage system for me in July 2018. I had wasted a lot of money on the old one and was nervous of throwing good money after bad. Almo was recommended to me by a satisfied customer. When I contacted Allister he was extremely patient and explained the process very clearly. As the work progressed Allister kept me informed as to what was happening at every stage. When I couldn’t be there he sent me photos with an explanation. There was a lot of digging involved, but when Allister and his team left they had leveled and reseeded my lawn to perfection.

Ayr Hill National School

We recently employed the services of ALMO Environmental Solutions to install perimeter fencing at Ayr Hill N.S. A first-class service and excellent communication was provided from initial pricing to completion of the job. Work was completed on schedule, all existing material was taken away and the garden area were left as found. The Board of Management were extremely pleased with the high quality workmanship and attention to detail. We would have no hesitation in recommending Almo for this type of work.
